Who is eligible?

PGDE programme is aimed to provide the broad training requisite for general graduates who wish to take up teaching as a career, to get professional training in education. Thus, ALL those having a degree other than education are welcome if they are thinking to engage in the teaching activity.

Why has it been designed?

After graduation from universities and colleges, many holders of the general degrees in either Science or Arts have found their way into the teaching profession without having trained to teach. Thus, to improve their career prospects, and enhance their professional, personal and vocational growth, they need further preparation to become full-fledged professional teachers.

The programme structure

The PGDE programme shall run for one year (which shall be divided into two semesters) and will be offered on full time basis.  It shall consist of a minimum of 120 courses-credits divided into: 90 credits of theoretical courses; 18 credits of a research paper; and 12 credits of a teaching practice.

Admission Procedures

Generally, a candidate admitted for the PGDE programme should have a minimum qualification of the first degree with GPA of at least 2.7; or its equivalent from a recognized university.  An applicant with a GPA lower than 2.7 may be admitted only if is having a recommendation letter of good performance from his/her employer.

The department offers a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (Med CUI). This Masters Programme is designed for educators interested in researching, developing, and implementing curriculum changes to support achievement. This program will allow educators to focus on curriculum methodology, pedagogy, and theoretical applications. This programme will ensure that teachers have access to a greater range of research-backed strategies that prepare them to tackle any challenge in the classroom.

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (Med CUI)

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (Med CUI) prepares educators who are interested in researching, developing, and implementing curriculum changes for quality education. The programme focuses on curriculum methodology, pedagogy, and theoretical application. It emphases teachers to have a greater range of research-backed strategies that prepare them to overcome classroom challenges. It covers Practical aspects during tutorials, seminars, workshops and field tours for the students to apply knowledge and skills attained from the theories learnt. Med CUI focuses on educational quality and achievement of national education aim. Nonetheless, it has a broad scope as it covers the school, learners and teachers besides the development of a society in general

However, the Med CUI aims to provide meaningful clinical experience and relevant assessment procedures that improve the teachers’ competency in curriculum development and instruction. The employment opportunities for the Med CUI graduates rest in:

Relevance of Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction (Med CUI)

The MEd CUI training remains necessary for producing curriculum developers, planners, overseers and practitioners. The program increases the capacity of manpower available in curriculum planning, development and implementation department leading to strengthening their ability to provide such services. Such training provides the community with skilled curriculum developers, planners, overseers and practitioners to deal with curriculum issues, teaching and associated improvement concern.

The program specifically contributes in:

  1. Planning and organizing curriculum development and instruction services.
  2. Training of curriculum developers, planners, overseers and practitioners.
  3. Providing critical analysis of curriculum development and instruction with the view of improving  education quality.
  4. Strengthening the link between Sokoine University of Agriculture and curriculum developers, planners, overseers and practitioners.
  5. Advancing curriculum development, planning and implementation.

The programme covers research-based theories and methodologies concerning curriculum development, planning and implementation and learning processes. The study focuses on fundamental tools for curriculum, planning, analysis and intervention, research skills and communication techniques, which are beneficial across professional implantation of the classroom curriculum.

Programme Objectives

The programme provides the basis for analysis and evaluation of educational theory, practices and policy within the intellectual and empirical contents of education.  It produces well-qualified teachers in support of government initiatives in staffing secondary schools and other educational areas with experts to man the teaching.

Specifically, at the end of this programme, the Med CUI graduates should be able to:

  1. Produce competent master graduates with broader understanding on educational curriculum issues and teaching and their relationship with the overall socio-economic development of a society as a whole
  2. Produce graduate teachers with in-depth knowledge on various theories which influence the planning and implementation of the  teaching and learning process
  • Produce graduates with teacher professional skills, awareness, understanding and commitment to professional ethics.
  1. Prepare graduates with practical skills to design, manage, monitor and evaluate curriculum and teaching program policies and programmes
  2. Produce graduates with capacity to undertake curriculum and instruction educational research.
  3. Produce graduates with capacity to analyze and evaluate key trends in curriculum history, theory, and philosophy
  • Produce graduates with capacity to evaluate curriculum, instruction, and aligned assessments and use student data to inform curricular and instructional decisions
  • Produce competent master graduates who can accommodate the many forms of diversity that should represented in curriculum, instruction, and assessment

Expected Learning Outcomes

The Med CUI programme produces graduates who are able to:

  1. Demonstrate mastery on curriculum planning, development, implementation and evaluation at all educational levels
  2. Analyze the relationship between  educational curriculum, teaching practices and social-economic welfare of the society;
  • Prepare and upgrade personnel to serve as researchers, educators and curriculum developers
  1. Undertake educational analysis in the areas of curriculum design, implementation, assessment, management and other related issues;
  2. Provide professional services to education institutions on matters related to curriculum and instruction
  3. Propose appropriate curriculum policy interventions and strategies to address educational needs or problems facing the country ;
  • Conduct independent research on various issues related to educational curriculum and teaching strategies including monitoring and evaluation of projects and programs related to Curriculum and Instruction;
